A truck crashed on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon, injuring a number of people and disrupting the preholiday trip home for thousands of commuters.

The wreck was startling, with the truck, which appeared from images on social media to be a trash truck, flipping over a railing and landing nose-first on the westbound lanes of Route 495, which carries traffic flowing out of Manhattan.

It partially blocked the road, and forced the shutdown of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the busiest in the country.

An official of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the terminal, said he could not estimate how long bus service would be suspended. He advised commuters to find other ways of getting home.

At least one commuter bus company had diverted its buses to a train station in Secaucus, N.J., to begin westbound runs.

Travelers seeking alternatives to reach New Jersey were directed to New Jersey Transit rail, PATH train service and commuter ferries.
