Tourism sector boost as 400 hotel workers vaccinated – KBC

At least 400 people working in the tourism industry in Mombasa County have received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The vaccination exercise conducted on Tuesday targeted 3000 frontline workers in the tourism and hospitality sector as part of a plans by the government to help revive the COVID-19 battered industry.

The hoteliers who turned up at the Makadara Grounds in Mombasa included hotel keepers, tour operators, bar and restaurant owners who lined up to receive the first jab of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move saying it will safeguard the workers who interact with thousands of domestic and International tourists flocking the county.

The County Government of Mombasa County says, apart from facilitating the inoculation exercise, it has slashed licensing fees by more than 50% in the last one year.

Tourism Department Chief Officer Asha Abdullahi says the county is intensifying marketing campaigns through the sister city innovative programs to attract more tourists into the county through direct flights.

Players in the industry have also been challenged to diversify their products and services to remain afloat.

Mombasa County further expects increased number of visitors following the lifting of cessation of movement in five counties including the capital Nairobi, as flights and Standard Gauge Railway passenger services begin operation.
