Two children drown while swimming in Kendu Bay

A trader in Kendu Bay lost his two children on Thursday morning after they drowned while swimming in a river.

Damian Ochieng, 9, and his brother Alphonse Beven, 5, died while swimming in river Wang’ Adonji.

Their father, James Agwenge, is a trader at Kendu Bay town.

Witnesses said the the children met their death after they ventured into the deeper part of the river. Colleagues who accompanied them survived.

Area Chief Tobias Aduda said the minors were overwhelmed by water currents.

“They were swept by rapidly moving water in the river when they were swimming. Their two colleagues who were watching at the river bank rushed to call a woman to rescue them,” Aduda said.

He said local divers helped in retrieving the bodies before they were moved to Kendu Bay Adventist Hospital Mortuary.

Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome urged parents to take care of their children during the festive season.

“It is sad to lose two children at ago. I call on parents to be keen in monitoring movement of their children during this season,” Okuome said.
