Two killed, 13 injured in Mau Summit accident

Two people died on the spot and 13 others were injured in a grisly road accident after a 14-seater matatu Sunday morning collided with a lorry at Mau Summit area on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

Kuresoi North Deputy County Commissioner Felix Wafula said the driver of the matatu was trying to make a u-turn on the road when the vehicle was hit by the lorry from behind.

Those injured are receiving treatment at the Nakuru County Referral Hospital and Eldama Ravine District Hospital in Baringo County.

Wafula said man-hunt is underway for the driver of the lorry who escaped after the accident.

Elsewhere, three family members died and three others were injured when lightning struck Kakapel Village in Teso North Sub County on Saturday.

Angurai South Ward Member of County Assembly Grace Olita Omasete who visited the injured at St Mary’s Mission Centre, Chelelemuk Angurai Sunday morning said she made arrangements in partnership with the County Government for the three – husband, wife and grandchild to be transferred to Kocholia Sub County Hospital for specialized treatment.

The family members were struck while inside their house. The heavy storms that were experienced in most parts of the county also killed a cow a few kilometres away.

Omasete said lightning strikes are common in her ward and appealed to the National and County Governments to install lightning arrestors in learning institutions and lightning prone areas.
