I like a good battle of the bands. Ochungulo Family are the guys whom I am convinced have a PhD in Sheng and Ethic, the hitherto darlings of the Kenyan music scene. Ochungulo Family cannot hope to avoid the comparison with Ethic.
The two groups make catchy songs sung in Sheng and both groups are filled with lads. Add to that the fact that both groups owe most of their supporters to the ghettoes of Nairobi and you can see where I am going with this.
Hell, both groups have worked with Kansoul on remixes of their songs.
Honestly, when I need to learn what is good in the hood in a matter of speaking (see what I did there?) I listen to songs by either group. In Ochungulo Family’s latest offering Aluta, there is a lyric by I think Dmore who says,
tuko jing na majong/ na mafans kwenye base wanazoza
Both Ethic and Ochungulo favour skirting the risque line and their videos often feature lasses barely out of their teens twerking and gyrating to the borderline erotica lyrics.
And while I enjoy listening to both camps as I pregame, I got to thinking, who between the two is the favourite of the fans? All the youngins, the rich kids, cool kids, the odies need to get in on this poll and let an old fogey like me know what’s what.
