Baringo woman gives birth, strangles and throws baby in pit latrine

A 21-year old woman is being held at Kabarnet police station in Baringo County for allegedly strangling to death her newborn baby and throwing the body in a pit latrine.

Reportedly Nancy Kiptum, a resident at Kaptimbor estate gave birth before committing the act on Friday morning.

“I walked up around 7am and saw some people crowded around the latrine. They were mourning while viewing some traces of blood” A resident Maurice Kiptoo said.

Kiptoo said he heard people saying there was a breathless body of a young child spotted inside the filth cemented pit latrine.

He said the charged residents nearly turned up to beat the woman, “but we hurriedly informed the police who arrived at the scene immediately to help safeguard the woman and evacuate the child’s body” he said.

However, Officer in charge of Kabarnet Police Station Major Reuben Chemwetich confirmed the incident saying the woman has already been arrested and is currently being held for questioning.

“The woman sounds so confident that she really committed the act, although she says some fellow women friends convinced her to do it” Chemwetich said.

He said police investigations are still ongoing to arrest all the individuals behind the incident.

The woman further told people openly that it was her first time giving birth to a child, although some neighbours hinted that it was her routine business.

Sources further said the woman who lived in a rental house hails from Keturwo in Baringo North Sub-County.

Neighbours said she used to invite numerous men to her house, “So she had said she wasn’t aware who the exact father of her deceased child is” a resident said.
