Claims Makau pockets millions in boda tender – Weekly Citizen

Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has come under fierce fire for allegedly mismanaging National Government Constituency Development Fund training cash for boda boda riders in the area after he granted Nairobi based Rocky Driving School an inflated tender through single sourcing contrary to procedure of open bidding.

Sources told Weekly Citizen that the MP had refused to grant local firms in Machakos county a chance to gain economic empowerment through an open tender to train boda boda riders after they submitted lower prices but were left out after open bidding was deferred. Instead Rocky Driving School owned by a mhindi won the “single sourced” tender at Sh17,000 per boda boda rider grossing a tidy sum from the almost 3,000 bodas in the county. It is claimed that other driving schools had quoted figures as low as Sh11,000 and that the inflated figure would see the MP and his associates pocket Sh6000 from every rider, through fiddling with CDF accounts. “Rocky would be paid Sh17,000 but forfeit Sh6,000 to the MP!”
Enraged residents have now appealed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to probe the deal and have it cancelled as it is denying locals in the area a chance to gain from an economic activity that would empower them, one fundamental reason for the creation of devolved local government entities.
Boda boda riders are also unhappy with the heavy-handed manner of Rocky Driving School whose training schedule they claim is substandard as the trainers are not familiar with the roads in the region.
