Govt to set up a food safety authority to protect consumers




The government plans to set up a National Food Safety Authority to save the consumer from harmful and poisonous food being sold in the market.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri says most of the milk and vegetables in markets are contaminated, posing health risks consumers, hence the need to protect citizens from such exploitation.

Cases of contamination of foodstuffs comprising both farm produce as well as processed ones have been reported.

This has captured the attention of the government that now plans to set up a safety authority to check food being sold in the market for contamination.

CS Kiunjuri says food contamination is most rampant for milk and vegetables.

Officials are urging dairy farmers to desist from contaminating milk and focus on improving the quality of their produce to ensure milk in the market is safe for human consumption.

Milk processor, Brookside Dairies has laid out plans to award farmers who work extra hard and produce quality milk.

Milk processor, Brookside Dairies has the capacity of processing over 1.5 million litres of milk daily and are exploring exporting to among other markets China.
