The crisis in Ukraine has spared no one, including hundreds of Kenyans, the majority of them being students, who stay in European nation.

Among those who have caught up caught up in the military fight pitting Russia against Ukraine is a daughter of Kenyan MP.

Yusra Omar, whose father is Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi, has been going on well with her studies in Kyiv City until recently when everything changed in a matter of days.

Together with seven other Kenyan students, they left Ukraine’s capital and walked many kilometres to Poland where it is a bit safer.

“The situation in Ukraine is not good because moving out from some cities is hard because there is no means of transport. We left when the tension was starting to build and we were lucky to get out,” she said in a phone conversation with her father.

Despite crossing from Ukraine, Yusra says life has not been easy in Poland as they are unable to get basic needs such as food.

“We travelled many kilometres by foot and entered Poland, we are stranded here and very little is being done,” she lamented.

She added that government had promised to evacuate them once they move to neighbouring countries. That pledge has not been honoured.

“We were advised to get out of Ukraine so that to repatriate us could be done from neighbouring countries. Many other Kenyans are still stranded in Ukraine,” Yusra said.

Mwinyi said he was making arrangements for his daughter’s evacuation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it doing all it can to ensure Kenyans fleeing Ukraine get free passage in the countries around.
