IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has said that they may consider postponing 2022 elections if the covid-19 continues for a better part of this year.
Chebukati said that the election need a lot of preparation and consultation that were to be done this year.
He says that they have to prepare adequately for any election and the Covid-19 pandemic has made some of their plans remain undone.
“We’ve a lot activities to perform before elections, already the pandemic has done a lot of damage. We many consider postponing elections.” He said
Wafula Chebukati however noted that the proposal will have to go through parliament frr approval with the majority.
“The proposal will have to be taken to parliament to be discussed and if they pass it, we will be forced to postpone the elections with immediate effect. We can’t risk the lives of Kenyans, the virus is deadly and we will d what is necessary to avoid more spread.” He said
Chebuaki said that they consulted the health ministry and noted that the pandemic is increasing exponentially and tough days are looming ahead.
“CS Muyahi Kagwe has also told us that the pandemic will not stop soon and we have to prepare for what may come.” He said
Kenya has so far confirmed an additional 4 cases yesterdayy, bringing the tally to 126.
The four were in a cluster of 372 people who were tested for the virus in the last 24 hours.
Three of the four cases are Kenyans while the fourth patient is a Pakistani National who recently travelled to the country.
One of the Kenyan patient from the cluster had traveled from Malawi while the other two contracted the virus locally.
Speaking on Saturday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the government has so far tested 1886 people from the 2050 cases currently in designated isolation centres across the country.
184 people are however yet to undergo the screening and testing with the government saying efforts in tracing the contacts of those in quarantine are currently underway.
