Can the Grammys go on?

If, on the psychographic map of award season red carpets, the Oscars are the hyper-controlled superego and the MTV Video Music Awards are the anything-goes, let-it-all-hang-out id, then the Grammys are a combination of the two: a dress parade made to advertise the individual brands on show (Billie Eilish, Lizzo) in the most exaggerated, fashion-aware way possible.

This year, however, begins with a shock, as Kobe Bryant has died, along with his daughter Gianna, in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles just hours before the Grammys. There were no survivors of the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter.

My heart is in pieces hearing the news of this unimaginable tragedy. I can’t fathom what the families are going through. Kobe meant so much to me and to us all. Sending my prayers, love, and endless condolences to Vanessa and the family and anyone who lost someone on that flight.

One of the first was Lizzo. Forget the tiny bag: She went major old-school glamour this evening, in a strapless, slit-leg Versace gown with a stole (and Veronica Lake hair!). The nails, dripping in crystals, and the bejeweled arm bands add to the effect. She looks kind of like an angelic host.
