Logistics platform Sendy, through the Nairobi city council, has provided additional licenses to top-performing motorcycle drivers on their platform, allowing them to access the Nairobi Central Business District.
This is big news for Sendy as the County government banned all motorcycle riders without licences from accessing the CBD locking out riders from competing platforms such as Glovo, SafeBoda, Bolt Boda and UberBoda and UberEats.
By being the only firm that has an agreement with the county government, Sendy is sure to rake in all the B2B and C2C business such as food and parcel deliveries and e-commerce orders from shops in Nairobi’s CBD.
Last week, Glovo announced it will be expanding across various city estates in Nairobi to meet the growing demand and began with Nairobi’s Central Business District using skaters who can be able to do door-to-door deliveries from restaurants and offices.
“We have launched our courier services in CBD. We are in Thika Road, Ruaka, Eastlands and are expanding to Karen in a week. We are constantly thinking of where next to launch,” Glovo General Manager William Bentall told TechMoran.
Being the biggest in CBD, Sendy has great advantage over the rest of the pack. Not all business in CBD originates into CBD and it becomes expensive for platforms like Glovo to engage both a rider and a skater to fulfil a CBD-inbound or outbound order. Skaters are only good for business inside CBD. However, Sendy has the powers to get an order from CBD or have it delivered there. As the central business district, there are millions of SMEs based here without the luxury of spending much on their deliveries to double down on margins.
By adhering to the requirements set by the county, Sendy now has over 150 riders with licences able to access the CBD, making it one of the few logistics companies with access to the CBD.
This move will ensure that Sendy, and the drivers who meet requirements set by the platform, are able to serve businesses within CBD like Skygarden, needing delivery services. Riders who have a rating of 4 stars and above on the platform, have been provided with branding licences paid entirely by Sendy. Each licence costs KSh. 9,100 annually.
Issuing drivers with licences will help them tap into the economic activity generated by the many businesses in the CBD that need delivery services.
“The Nairobi Central Business district is considered the hub of many small and medium-sized businesses. For this reason, we have taken the initiative to issue our top-performing motorcycle drivers with licences that will allow them access to the CBD and complete deliveries there. For our drivers, this amounts to more income, seeing that a high concentration of Nairobi’s businesses are based in the CBD. For our customers, this means that through Sendy, they are able to deliver in and outside of the CBD more efficiently.” said Mr. Meshack Alloys Sendy Founder and CEO .
Sendy powers deliveries for firms such as Safaricom, Bidco, Toyota, Highlands or Chandaria among others. Most of these firms have clients and offices or shops in CBD. This move is huge for Sendy. Sendy aims to double its client businesses to over 5,000 companies by 2020.
