CA Cancels Licences of 60 Radio Stations

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has cancelled the licenses and revoked frequencies of 60 radio stations in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, 22nd December CA Director-General Ezra Chiloba said the radio stations failed to comply with the regulatory requirements.

“The Authority has commenced regulatory actions against the following listed broadcasters and applicants of broadcasting service provisioning licences for failure to comply with the relevant requirements as provided for in the Act,” said Chiloba.

He further urged those operating TV and radio stations to follow set legal procedures to avoid shutdown.

“In accordance with Section 46C of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, it is illegal to provide any form of broadcasting service in Kenya without a license issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA). Contravention of this requirement attracts a fine not exceeding Ksh1,000,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both,” he added.

Some of the notable radio stations including Capital FM, NRG Radio, Qwetu Radio, Mbaitu Fm and One Fm have been affected.

Other stations include community and religious organisation radios and Fm stations being run by universities.

Those radio stations run by universities include MU Fm (Moi University), KIMC Fm (Kenya Institute of Mass Communications) MMU Fm (Multimedia Media University), Egerton Fm (Egerton University), MMUST Fm (Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology) and KU Fm (Kenyatta University).

Chiloba noted that the stations have been give 30 days to comply.
