The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is at the receiving end after wrongly listing an innocent man among the most wanted criminals supposed to face terrorism charges.

The young man, Robert Gathogo Ngunjiri, saw his photos doing rounds on social media and was prompted to report the matter to the nearby police station to detail the misinformation.

“He surrendered to the police station on Wednesday night claiming that he was the man in the photo captioned as Abdurahman Hija but the information accompanying it was not his,” Nyeri Central Sub-County Police Commander Paul Kuria stated.

Kuria revealed that the 27-year-old man had been arrested and faced robbery with violence charges but won the appeal and was left free in 2019.

However, after Gathogo surrendered to the police to avow his innocence, he was arrested and presented to officers from Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), who took him to Nairobi for interrogation.

The details of Hija, that accompany the photo of Gathogo, indicate that the suspect (Hija) is a most wanted outlaw who escaped to Somalia and trained with Al-Shabaab before returning to Kenya, where he has been conducting sporadic attacks, with the aid of other terrorists, targeting security personnel.

He was among the eight suspected terrorists that are on the loose, and DCI called upon the public to give leads that may lead to their apprehension.

DCI warned that the suspects were armed and dangerous.
