Meru Senator Mithika Linturi had the shock of his life after a cleric stopped him from making political comments at the altar.

The lawmaker was attacking ODM leader Raila Odinga when Bishop Calisto Odedo of Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM), Meru branch, interrupted him.

Linturi accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of being the cause of clashes after every election.

“The country has been fighting because there is an individual who does not accept election results once they are announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC),” he said.

But before he could proceed, Odede rushed to the altar and warned him against propagating toxic politics in the church.

He told the senator that CITAM does not condone political intolerance.

“Thank you very much, senator. As I mentioned a little earlier, as a church we try to minister to people from different political parties without creating any sense of animosity. In a function like this which is in our church, we try to maintain that attitude.

“Whether you support UDA, ODM, or Jubilee, you are welcome here and you need to feel comfortable here that no one is alienating you, no one is saying some things that are negative to annoy anyone. Mheshimiwa, you can continue provided you don’t go that route,” he said.

The lawmaker apologised to the congregation.

“These things can be at times very emotional and I am sorry and I apologise to the church,” the lawmaker.

CITAM is among the few denominations in the country that discourage politicians from commenting on matters of politics when addressing their church members.
