A section of aspirants eyeing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in tomorrow’s nominations now understand why Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici left the party on sensing that the primaries will not be fair.

Barely hours to the nominations, tens of hopefuls now suspect that the wheelbarrow outfit has mooted a plan to rig in their rivals.

Tuesday saw savage internal disputes from contenders, who registered their frustrations on social media and in press conferences.

Some have threatened to ditch the party while others are demanding a refund of the nomination fees, noting that they do not have faith in the primaries.

Deputy President William Ruto, the UDA party leader, pledged to personally supervise the exercise and ensure it runs smoothly.

Bungoma governorship aspirant is among those crying foul. He claims that he paid the nomination fees, but was shocked to establish that UDA will not field a candidate for the seat. Instead, Ruto will support Ford-Kenya candidate, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka. He wants his money back.

Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire has also raised similar concerns and warned the party against conducting shambolic polls. She claims that that party favour her competitor, Manyatta MP John Muchiri for the Embu gubernatorial seat.

Veteran journalist Njogu wa Njoroge is also not happy. The former Kameme FM presenter is aggrieved after learning that UDA prefers Charity Kathambi, the sitting MP, for the Njoro parliamentary seat. She challenged that party to guarantee him a free and fair exercise or else he will rally his supporters to frustrate it. If you recall, Njogu had unfettered access to President Uhuru Kenyatta until recently when he resigned from Kameme, a station owned by the First Family. He revealed that he decided to sacrifice his friendship with the President after “listening to the ground”.

Several aspirants from Rift Valley region have resigned, saying that they cannot participate in a “funny process”.

Ngirici has a word for the disappointed UDA hopefuls.

“Indeed it’s free and ‘fare’ heading home, kindly cooperate. The fixing is happening at a ‘cul de sac’ with no escape route.”
