Sipangwingwi is Not Hate Speech, Says MCSK Boss Mutua

Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua has said that the term Sipangwingwi is not hate speech.

Speaking during an interview on TV47 on Saturday, Mutua said that the term Sipangwingwi is not in violation of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) ethics.

“Sipangwingwi is not in violation of the ethics. In fact, the word they used is ‘hatupangwingwi.’ NCIC did not ban the song ‘sipangwingwi’ and l dare them to touch it,” he said.

He further said that Sipangwingwi is one of the best songs by Kenyan artists.

NCIC had listed the term with 24 other words as hate speech.

The listed terms include English words fumigation, uncircumcised, eliminate and kill.

Kiswahili words included madoadoa, watu wa kurusha mawe, watajua hawajui, wabara waende kwao, kaffir, chunga kura, wakuja, chinja kafir, kwekwe, and mende

Sheng words included kama noma noma, kama mbaya mbaya, operation linda kura and hatupangwingwi.

Kikuyu terms were kihii and uthamaki ni with while Kalenjin terms in the list were kimurkeldet (brown teeth), otutu labotonik (uproot the weed) and ngetiik while Mwiji was the only Meru term in the list.

NCIC chairman Samuel Kobia said the words are banned in public rallies, social media posts and political talk shows.
