Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Karen Campus is an institution of supposed greatness, supposedly breeding students in the areas of Law, Business and Information Technology, along with the affluent Langata neighborhood.
Paperwise, it offers advice, possibility, and resources. What is going on, though, is a concerning trend of lack of care, coercion, and disappointment.
The students say the campus is run by an administration that tries to annoy rather than help them.
A request to be guided usually comes with the threat of an additional examination, being suspended, or some other form of punishment instead of a direct response.
The institution has developed to be characterized by bureaucracy, mismanagement, and indifference.

The Student Transfer Nightmare
One student, a Data Science and Analytics learner who should be entering his third year, has been caught in a transfer limbo for nearly two years.
Despite following all the required procedures and paying the necessary fees, the administration has delayed and ignored his request.
Instead of being supported, he has faced repeated frustration and uncertainty, forced to navigate a system that disregards his rights and obstructs his academic progress.
The prolonged inaction has caused immense stress and anxiety, highlighting a broader culture where student welfare is deprioritized and legitimate concerns are met with indifference or delay.
Frustration Driving Dangerous Behavior
The consequences of administrative neglect are spilling beyond the campus gates.
Students living off-campus in Gataka and Rongai report turning to drugs and other harmful coping mechanisms as a way to deal with stress caused by the university’s inaction.
This is not mere rumor. Students are self-medicating and seeking escape from an environment that ignores their rights, fails to provide guidance, and consistently frustrates their efforts to succeed.
The campus, meant to nurture learning, has become a source of despair and risk.
Finance Office in Total Disarray
Adding to the crisis is the finance office, which students describe as unprofessional and ineffective.
Staff reportedly cannot explain fee structures, provide clear payment instructions, or answer basic queries about course requirements.
Students are left to navigate financial processes alone, often at great personal stress, while paying tuition for services that are supposed to support them.
The Architecture of Isolation.
The life in JKUAT Karen is conducive to despair.
Students detail a miserable routine: attend the classes, study, and go directly to the hostel or the bedsitter.
There is no vibrancy of community life, which is vital to mental health.
Pulse is nonexistent, and there is no social get-out, so students are stranded in an academic desert.
What is worse, the demanded association with lecturers is said to be strained and transactional.
Students also experience a lack of support and no one to hear them in their academic hardships, which develops a sense of loneliness that justifies the remorse many experience at the choice of the campus.

Leadership Absent, Students Ignored
Campus leadership and student representatives are present in name but largely absent in practice.
Complaints are ignored, offices are inaccessible, and advocacy is almost nonexistent.
Instead of addressing concerns, some students report being threatened when they attempt to raise issues, creating a culture of fear.
The combination of administrative neglect, threats, and leadership inaction has left students demoralized, stressed, and voiceless.

The Human Cost
The neglect of student welfare has real and dangerous consequences.
Anxiety, depression, stress, and risky behaviors have become common coping mechanisms for students frustrated by a system that ignores them.
The campus, instead of being a place of opportunity, has become a pressure cooker of despair.
A Call for Immediate Action
JKUAT Main Campus and the university council must intervene without delay. Students deserve clarity, guidance, and protection. Neglect is not education, threats are not leadership, and silence is not peace.
Karen Campus must be held accountable. Students are paying tuition, trusting the institution, and giving their effort.
The administration has a duty to act responsibly, transparently, and ethically.
Until these reforms are implemented, the campus will remain a place of frustration, fear, and despair for those it was supposed to serve.
