Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is on the spot for allegedly siding with corrupt Nyanza governors, as its officers are accused of pocketing Sh10m weekly from Siaya governor to avoid arrest. EACC has allegedly been shielding the governors from being taken to court and being prosecuted over corruption related cases within their counties.
To begin with, three police officers who are attached to the EACC headquarters at the Integrity Centre are said to be visiting Siaya county to pocket between money on a weekly basis so as to protect the area governor Cornel Rasanga from being arrested and prosecuted in a court over corruption allegations in his government since 2013 when he took over the office.
According to information that leaked to the media from the department of finance at the county government of Siaya, the three said police officers attached to the EACC headquarters use a lawyer who allegedly takes the money on their behalf upon the instruction from Governor Rasanga.
A lawyer said to be the governor’s legal adviser is the one being used as a conduit to allegedly swindle the funds from the department of finance with an aim of protecting the governor from being arrested by the EACC sleuths.
The most recent one appeared to be when Siaya governor was heading to Abu Dhabi and the said officers ambushed him wanting to be arrest him at the airport and taken to court to answer charges related to corruption allegations in his government. The governor is alleged to have parted with Sh10 million through the said lawyer who facilitated the deal hence enabling the embattled governor to travel to his destination.

The officers are now said to have made it a habit of minting money from the county’s coffers whenever they feel like getting money from the besieged governor.
Sources at the finance department argue that the county is losing money in such dubious way in the name of protecting the county boss. Rasanga at one time allegedly bragged that he is well connected within the country’s political system hence arresting him by the EACC sleuths would be a tall order.
He allegedly bragged that he made some phone call to a senior politician in the country when he landed at airport when some detectives wanted to arrest him but the senior politician saved his skin by intervening in the matter.
