Former IEBC Commissioner Mohamed Abdullahi Sharawe Passes Away

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Mohamed Abdullahi Sharawe has died, marking the end of a distinguished career in Kenya's public service. 

His death was confirmed on Monday, 20 July 2026, with leaders across the country paying tribute to his contribution to governance, public administration and electoral reforms.

Sharawe served as an IEBC commissioner following the establishment of the electoral body in 2011. 

Before joining the Commission, he held several senior government positions, including Chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC) from 1999 to 2005. 

He also served as a Permanent Secretary in various ministries and was a commissioner of the Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission (IIBRC), which played a key role in Kenya's electoral and boundary review process.

News of his passing prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders and former colleagues. 

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta described Sharawe as a distinguished public servant whose dedication to strengthening Kenya's democratic institutions would be remembered with gratitude. 

Eldas MP Adan Keynan, who announced the death, also praised him as a respected statesman, engineer and elder who served the country with integrity and humility.

The Public Service Commission also mourned its former chairperson, describing him as a leader whose stewardship helped strengthen public institutions and advance professionalism in the civil service.

Details regarding funeral arrangements had not been announced by the family at the time of publication.
