Kenya bags two silver medals as World Relay concludes in Poland – KBC

The national relay team cinched two silver  medals as the curtains came down on the 5^th edition of the World Relay in Silesia, Poland.

Kenya’s men’s 4x200m quartet of  Mark Otieno,Mike Mokamba,Elijah Mathew and Hesbon Ochieng posted season best of  1:24.26 to finish second in the relay race behind winners Germany who posted 1:22.43.

It was a marked improvement from Kenya in the race,securing their best ever finish at the event.

This was Kenya’s second silver in the two day competition. Ferguson Rotich and Naomi Korir weathered stiff challenge to grab second place in the 2x2x 400m mixed relay behind winner Poland during the first day of the championship.

Kenya finished third in the Shuttle hurdles mixed relay. The quartet of Priscilla Tabunda,Michael Nzuku,Nusra Rukia and Wiseman Mukhobe recorded 59:89 seconds ,a season best, behind winners Germany and Poland.

The women’s 4x200m relay team narrowly missed out on the rostrum places fter finishing fifth in the final.

The quartet of Joan Cherono ,Doreen Waka,Monica Safania and Maximila Imali recorded 1:38:26 to wound  up fifth behind winners Poland ,Ireland and Ecuador who finished in 1^st-3^rd places respectively.

During the race,Maximila Imali, ran  the fastest split  posting 23.45 underlining her prowess over the distance.

The championship acted as   a last stop for the qualification of the Tokyo Olympics Games.

Eight finalists in the women’s and men’s 4x100m, men’s and mixed 4x400m qualified for the Tokyo games.

In addition, top 10 teams in the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, and the top 12 teams in the mixed 4x400m, also qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Oregon 2022.
