Nairobi — Former Kakamega Senator Boniface Khalwale has shelved his gubernatorial bid in support of Cleophas Malala.
Khalwale will now vie for the Kakamega Senate seat after talks that were led by Deputy President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza principals Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula.
Malala who is the incumbent Kakamega Senator accepted the endorsement and exuded confidence that he will be successful.
“It is not about position but about the welfare of the community. In fact, I have not stepped down, I have stepped up so that I focus more on the common agenda that covers our people and also the rest of the Kenyans,’ Khalwale said.
“I am presenting myself as the candidate in 2022 for the position of Senator of the County of Kakamega.”
Malala said, “With a lot of humility I wish to accept the nomination and endorsement for me to run as the governor of Kakamega. More so, I want to thank my political father Khalwale for ceding ground, and he has not done so because I am a better leader than him. He has done so be because of the sacrifice and the bigger picture Kenya Kwanza is looking at in the near future.”
The two had recently clashed over who between them is fit to be elected the next Kakamega governor during the Kenya Kwanza rally led by Wetangula in Shinoyi market in Kakamega County.
Mudavadi and Wetangula lauded the two leaders for amicable agreement and said they will be used as a good example moving forward in making the team strong as they seek other positions.

“Today we say hats off to both Khalwale and Malala, we want to appreciate the magnanimity of Khalwale. What they have done sets the example that we want to pursue in dealing with our members of Kenya Kwanza in other areas so that we can have some consensus building,” said Mudavadi.
DP Ruto hailed Malala and Khalwale and promised that Kenya Kwanza will mix more experienced candidates with youths who will offer great leadership
“We witness the experience and knowledge of a senior member of our team Boni Khalwale giving way to the youth and the passion of a younger person in our coalition Cleo Malala. This is the experience that we as Kenya Kwanza believe in that there is space for everyone,” DP Ruto said.
Malala will be seeking to replace Wycliffe Oparanya whose second and last term is coming to an end after August 9 polls.
He will face off with the Former Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) CEO Fernandes Barasa who will be vying on an ODM ticket among other candidates.
