Kenyans Raise Over ksh600k for Viral Young Mother

Kind-hearted Kenyans have come out in large numbers and contributed towards an initiative started by a teen mother, Shirleen Mukami, whose story went viral on social media as she trended for almost two days from November 10th, 2021.

She narrated her heart-touching story which highlighted how she got pregnant at the tender age of 20. She was also betrayed by the man who is the father of their baby who fled after discovering that she was pregnant.

The 20-year-old narrated the criticism and rejection that she faced in the community, she says that it was for this reason that she decided to start a foundation called the Baby Shower Sisters initiative to help young mothers like her who are facing the same problems, yet they are not opening up.

“This is basically a support group where myself and three more young mothers visit other young mothers like us. Mothers whose baby daddies disappeared.

“Mothers who didn’t experience the love of pregnancy. Mothers who didn’t experience a baby shower. Broken mothers just like us,” she stated.

On November 13, 2021, 801 Kenyans had donated Ksh623,204 towards the initiative which also seeks to help more than 100 young mothers who are victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

“Kenyans, kindly support our little ‘Baby Shower Sisters’ initiative. We’ve been doing little and can’t mind doing much.

“Going out more. Meeting more mothers and healing our minds. I don’t even have much myself. But it’s by giving that I have been receiving a diaper or two myself,” she added.

Her story received reactions from many Kenyans, among them Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua who commended Shirleen for opening up her situation. Karua pointed out that a problem shared is a problem half-solved.

“Your courage and strength are a blessing to others, and you deserve all the support. Keep going, and you will achieve great things in life as you raise your lovely child,” she stated.
