The Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) has banned an Indian gay-themed film titled ‘Badhaai Do’.
In a press statement issued on Monday, 14th February, Acting KFCB CEO Mr Christopher Wambua stated that the film promotes same-sex marriage which is contrary to the Kenya constitution.
“Badhaai Do overtly disregards our laws, constitution and sensibilities as a people,” said Wambua. “On this 14th day of February 2022, the Board pronounces the 147-minute gay-themed film titled: Badhaai Do, as restricted, that is, prohibited from exhibition, distribution, possession or broadcasting within the Republic of Kenya.”
According to Mr Wambua, the film tries to promote same-sex marriage as an acceptable way of life.
“Upon examination of the film, we noted a clear intent by the producers’ to promote same-sex marriage which is evident through the gay and lesbian characters in the film who explicitly seek to normalize their feelings for each other and ultimately convince their families to embrace and empathize with them,” said Wambua.
“According to Article 45 of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), marriage is defined as a union between persons of the opposite sex. Sections 162, 163, and 165 of the Penal Code criminalizes homosexual behaviour. The film in question, therefore, overtly disregards our laws, constitution, and sensibilities as a people.”
He warned that any attempt to exhibit, distribute, broadcast or posses the restricted film within the Republic of Kenya shall be met with the full force of the law, stating that the Board remains vigilant to ensure that films exhibited in Kenya promote our cultural values including preserving the institution of family.
This is not the first time that the KFCB has banned film that has homosexual content. In September last year, KFCB banned another film titled ‘I am Samuel’ on grounds of promoting same-sex marriage.
