More As for boys than girls : The Standard

A total of 358 male candidates scored straight As in this year’s KCSE exams compared to 269 females.

Data from the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) showed that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili, Christian Religious Education (CRE), Home Science, Art and Design, German and Sign Language subjects.
On the other hand, male candidates performed better in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Geography and History.
Compared to 2018 results, girls outshone boys in six subjects including metalwork, which is considered a predominantly male field.

It was also noted that this year, more male candidates scored Es, the lowest grade, than female candidates. At least 16,382 males scored Es compared to 12,936 females.
The difference between male and female candidates who scored D- was marginal, with the male number standing at 76,141, while the female number stood at 76,198.

Performed well
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said a total of 667,222 candidates sat for the exams in 2019.

At least 17 counties had more female candidates than male in 2019, compared to 18 counties recorded in 2018.
Counties with more female candidates include Meru, Vihiga, Kiambu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Kisumu, Uasin Gishu, Murang’a, Machakos, Kitui, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Kirinyaga, Kakamega, Kwale, and Nandi.
Meru had 12,345 female candidates compared to 10,822 male, Vihiga had 8,368 females compared to 6,893 males, Elgeyo Marakwet had 5,237 females and 4,505 males, Nyandarua had 7,648 females compared to 6,923 males, Tharaka Nithi had 5,438 females and 4,793 males, in Kisumu there were 10,103 females compared to 9,479 males while in Uasin Gishu there were 8,353 females compared to 7,893 male.
Among candidates who sat for the examinations aged 16 years and below saw girls perform better than boys.

In the top ten list, the positions were shared equally between both males and females.
