The county government of Nyamira hired armed policemen to block journalists from entering an interview room where nominees for the positions of county executive members were being interviewed.
According to the chief-of-staff, Kennedy Ongaga, the interviews were being conducted by members of an ad-hoc committe constituted by Governor Nyagarama to interview and shortlist the executive members. The exercise was being conducted behind locked doors of the governor’s boardroom at the county headquarters.
Even though, Nyagarama, himself was not present at the county headquarters, a person who issued the directive is said to have been acting under the governor’s instructions.
The journalists had requested to be allowed to witness the process but the panelists vehemently denied them access.
“We made a decision as a panel that there will be no one, not even the media will be allowed into the interview room and the resolution remains,” one untagged panelists only identified as Ouma who unlocked the door to address he journalists who were outside the boardroom said.
Two armed policemen were consequently mobilised and allocated seats at the entrance of the boardroom where they stayed for the better part of the day.
The interviews that have been going on since Monday, October 28 2019 will continue up to Wednesday October 30. According to one of the candidates who never wanted to be quoted in fear of being victimised, they panelists were merely out to extort money from them.
The same source revealed that the panel was inquiring even the amount of money they had in their bank accounts an indication that they wanted to know who has money and can bribe them.
