Juventus largely had 42-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to thank as the veteran made some important saves during the game.
Unfortunately, when it came to penalties, luck was not on the Italian champions side as Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed their team’s first two spot kicks.
Napoli, on the other hand, were successful in all their first four penalties and ended up winning the shootout 4-2.
Having gone into the final as slight underdogs, full marks had to be given to Genarro Gatusso’s side who, according to the balance of play, deserved the win at the Stadio Olimpico.
Notably, it was Napoli’s first piece of silverware in six seasons and Gattuso’s first as a manager.
Another subplot in the game was the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo lost a second consecutive final for the first time in his illustrious career, having missed out on the Supercoppa Italiana to Lazio in December 2019.
Ronaldo had three shots in the game with only one on target, and did not get the chance to convert a penalty in the shootout since Napoli won after four kicks.
Now that the Coppa Italia wrapped up, teams can now focus on the Serie A which resumes on Saturday with Torino facing Parma.
A wounded Juventus will take on Bologna on June 22.
