DCP's Sammy Kamau Wins Ol Kalou By-Election

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau has been elected the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after winning the parliamentary by-election held on 17 July 2026. 

The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Waweru the winner after he garnered 35,440 votes, 

comfortably defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes. Seven other candidates shared the remaining votes.

Following the announcement, the IEBC thanked voters, candidates, political parties, security agencies, election officials and observers for contributing to a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

The by-election attracted national attention as it was widely viewed as a key political contest between the ruling UDA and the opposition-aligned DCP, with leaders from both camps actively campaigning in the constituency. 

The outcome is expected to shape political conversations in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Addressing supporters after being declared the winner, Waweru thanked Ol Kalou residents for their support and pledged to prioritise development and effective representation in Parliament. 

He now succeeds the late Kiaraho as the constituency's representative in the National Assembly.
