In the last three General Elections, ODM leader Raila Odinga was not an option in the Mt Kenya region. However, the political landscape since 2018 when the former Prime Minister and President Uhuru Kenyatta brokered a truce following the disputed 2017 presidential election.

In the present political climate, it is not a big deal seeing the opposition chief visiting Mt Kenya counties and attracting huge crowds.

Raila’s long-time friend, media mogul SK Macharia, has taken advantage of this to market the AU High Commissioner for Roads and Infrastructure in the vote-rich bloc.

Through his Inooro FM, Macharia has been sponsoring concerts and tours in the area to sell Raila as the best choice to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Some of the station’s top presenters and famous Kikuyu musicians, including Samidoh, Jose Gatutura, and Ben Githae have been on the campaign trail.

The whole of last week and the first two days of this week, a caravan posed as meet-the-people-tour traversed Nakuru, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, and Kiambu counties. However, Raila’s name would feature prominently in all the stops.

The tour was largely successful, but there were areas where the station had a rough time.

In some parts of Nyeri and Kirinyaga, the convey was pelted with stones, with the locals saying they did not want anything to do with Raila.

Hostility

Presenters Michael Njenga, formerly Citizen TV, Nderitu Waihura, and Prof Ngugi Njoroge condemned the violence that stalked their roadshows.

“In Karatina, Mathira Constituency in Nyeri, we know who was involved in paying goons to disrupt our show. We are going to expose you very soon. We have been giving you a platform here on Inooro FM and Inooro TV, but you are so thankless,” Njenga said.

For his part, Nderitu alluded that it is allies of Deputy President William Ruto who paid the goons.

“They know the ground is not friendly to their candidate and that’s why they are trying sideshows. They are now realizing that there are so many Mt Kenya dwellers waiting for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s direction,” he said.

Prof Njoroge added that the Head of State is still the kingpin and his influence would shape the 2022 State House contest.

“The President should now visit the ground and tell his people whom he wants to succeed him. The people are eagerly waiting for his signal. He should lead Azimio (Raila’s outfit) campaigns in Mt Kenya.”
