A move by University of Nairobi vice chancellor Peter Mbithi to buy furniture and equipment for his office at a cost of Sh20 million and construction of his private residence in Karen valued at Sh200m is haunting him.
The purchase was done without following procurement procedures. And now Universities Academic Staff Union, UoN chapter has given Mbithi three months to resign or they down tools and force him out.

Education CS Magoha

The chapter secretary general George Omondi led officials in petitioning CS Education George Magoha to come to the rescue of the institution that is collapsing under debt.
UoN council is divided with a section deserting the embattled VC. His deputies are rarely in contact with him.
The goods are said to have been delivered on a Sunday night in his office thus not complying with procurement.
UoN branch officials want Ethics Anti-corruption Commission to probe the procurement. Also to be investigated is a private residence in Karen, Nairobi constructed by Mbithi at a cool Sh200 million. It is said, the project involved university’s labour with institution vehicles being used to deliver materials.
Mbithi for security reasons as he claims has located himself seven vehicles with dozens of mean-looking security men. The move is against stipulated government guidelines.
All this is happening as the institution owes workers millions in outstanding salary arrears and allowances. UoN has failed to remit tax deductions to Kenya Revenue Authority, National Hospital Insurance Fund and Paye As You Earn.
That Mbithi is feeling isolated was seen when he called a meeting for all the institutions’professors to whip sympathy. Mbithi is desperate for a second term and is lobbying and even bribing to win. Targeted are professors that are to sign a petition to Education ministry in Mbithi support.
Already, the university council is divided of contract renewal and fear is, the shrewd VC has compromised the majority as his allies boast.
