WHO DO YOU CARRY?
JESUS, THE JERUSALEM DONKEY, AND THE JERUSALEM ENTRY
By George Kimando
Today is Palm Sunday, when Christians celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem ahead of His Passion.
But it’s His manner of the entry that i’ll focus on.
He abandoned His Kingly stature and chose to ride a donkey as opposed to the expected ‘Royal’ showbiz and razzmatazz.
Still, the people of Jerusalem received Him like the royalty He was, spreading out garments and raising palms in His honour.
That donkey He rode enjoyed the honour and comfort of walking on those garments.
Am sure many of you have heard of this story about this particular donkey. That the following day, it was doing rounds in Jerusalem with its pals (see why i said it’s a story? Well, let’s focus on its significance).
To its dismay and frustrations, nobody recognized it! And it lamented as much to its comrades.
What it failed to understand was that its significance was only as relevant as who it carried. It didn’t realize that the royal reception it experienced was only as far as Jesus was present in its life.
Many times, we behave like that donkey.
We fail to recognize who is in us, and gets frustrated when we try to operate out of His orbit of divine grace and mercy.
Our lives are borrowed, or more correctly rented out to us for a purpose, from Him who created us and gave us breath. We are simply stewards of His vineyard that is His earth and His creation. It’s Him who gives us significance.
Unlike that donkey though, we have the privilege of knowing ourselves in Christ, and that our interaction with Him doesn’t leave us empty and frustrated. We know of our value and worth first by recognizing Him who lives in us. By allowing Him to guide our thoughts and deeds, others will see in us the Christ we profess.
It’s a call to find God in truth and spirit; to find Him in those we live and interact with – our families, spouses, children, colleagues at work, fellow parishioners, that beggar on the street, the supermarket attendant, other motorists and pedestrians, that political and corporate competitor…everyone.
It’s the challenge for us to radiate Him in word and deed, right from our thoughts and spirits, and being ultimately answerable to Him from the depth of our consciences.
Unlike that donkey, let’s not be mesmerized by the royalty surrounding Christ, but rather be convicted by His call to the will of the Father.
By submitting to His ultimate commandment of loving God and neighbour, His triumphant entry to Jerusalem and His victory over death on Calvary will have the meaning it was meant for.
By letting Him define our worth and value, our significance in His own significance will find anchoring for a truly fulfilling life in Him right here on earth.
Have a truly redefining Palm Sunday, and a great Holy Week ahead.
