Kenya men’s rugby sevens concluded their Olympics campaign on Wednesday morning, 28th July, with a 22-0 victory over Ireland in the ninth-place playoffs at Tokyo Stadium.

Shujaa had secured a 21-7 victory against hosts Japan to set up a ninth-place final with Ireland.

Johnstone Olindi scored and converted on the stroke of halftime to give Shujaa a 7-0 lead at the interval.

Three unconverted second-half tries from Jacob Ojee, Willy Ambaka, and Daniel Taabu secured the 22-0 result in what was Andrew Amonde’s final appearance in a Shujaa jersey after a 13-year playing stint on the side.

Kenya had been placed in Pool C of the competition where they missed out on quarterfinal qualification after three successive losses to the USA ( 14-19), South Africa (5-14), and Ireland (7-12).

Meanwhile, Ireland started their campaign with a 33-14 defeat to South Africa followed by a 19-17 defeat to the USA. Their final pool game was a 12-7 victory against Kenya.

They booked their spot in the 9th/10th playoffs after a 31-0 victory over South Korea.
