Is Uhuru too young to retire in 2022? – Weekly Citizen

Ex-minister and chairman of Strategic Food Reserve Board Noah Wekesa on his opinion on whether President Uhuru Kenyatta is too young to retire from politics in 2022.

Wekesa said Uhuru will be 60 years old in 2022, an age which he termed too young. He said he was flourishing as a minister in his 60s and, therefore, the head of state cannot retire at that age.

Speaking at an event on Saturday, December 21, the politician said changes should be made to the 2010 constitution so the president is accommodated after 2022.

” Uhuru is going nowhere at 60 years. We will look for a place where we can place him so that he can continue assisting Kenyans even after 2022,” said Wekesa.

His sentiments, however, rubbed up the wrong way other politicians who were in the same ceremony. Senator Moses Wetangula said the constitution does not regard age in presidential terms and therefore Uhuru will have to retire regardless of whether he is old or young.

“The Kenyan law is very clear, the commander in chief can only serve for five years, and another five if he gets re-elected, and therefore he will have to retire because he will have completed his constitutional term,” said Wetangula.
