Tanzania’s First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies in Zanzibar

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday morning while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Hafidh died at around 8:00 a.m. on September 7, 2026, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed his condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania.

Tanzania Mourns First Gentleman

Hafidh became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in March 2021 when his wife assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli, becoming the country’s first female president.

Despite his wife's prominent political position, Hafidh largely maintained a private life and made relatively few public appearances.

He married Samia in 1978, and the couple had four children. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a member of Tanzania's Parliament representing a Zanzibar constituency.

Hafidh was also known for his background in agriculture and academia, having worked as an agricultural academic before becoming First Gentleman.

Burial Arrangements

Funeral arrangements were underway in Kizimkazi, South Unguja, the family's home area in Zanzibar.

According to Tanzanian authorities, the burial was scheduled for Monday afternoon, with government, political and religious leaders expected to attend.

Messages of condolence have also come from regional leaders. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia, describing Hafidh as her lifelong companion, a beloved father and a distinguished Tanzanian.

Hafidh Ameir's death comes as President Samia continues her second term as Tanzania's head of state. His passing has brought together political and religious leaders as the country pays tribute to a man who, despite remaining largely outside the political spotlight, held a unique place in Tanzania's public life.
