ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, 17th August, launched a new strategic plan that he said is designed to unite the country.
Dubbed the Azimio la Umoja the project is glimpsed as Raila’s entry into the 2022 presidential race.
Although he did not officially declare his bid, leaders present during the meeting described as the “Nakuru Declaration”, endorsed the former Prime Minister for the top seat.
The forum was graced by senior ODM members and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s allies from the Mt Kenya region.
The attendees included Governors Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), who was also the host, Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Nderitu Mureithi (Laikipia), scores of MPs from Jubilee and ODM parties, and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth.
Waiguru, Muerithi, Kinyanjui, and Kenneth said they would popularize the opposition boss in their region, as he was the most suitable person to take over from President Kenyatta.
When he took to the podium, the former Premier said he would his main aim is to unite the country ahead of the next election.
“We cannot continue pitting each other against the other: the young against the old, poor against the rich, one faith against the other, or tribe against tribe. Kenya cannot afford another political violence,” he said.
He explained that his agenda would be transforming lives without targeting anyone.
Greetings
Before the meeting, Raila acknowledged greetings from a large crowd that had gathered in Nakuru town to welcome him.
“I know I’m violating Covid-19 restrictions, but I had to wave at you. Nakuru will roar today. My agenda is peace and making sure the poor become rich,” he said.
Earlier in the day, President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party approved the proposed pre-coalition agreement between the ruling outfit and ODM.
“Following various high-level consultations within the Jubilee Party that culminated in a joint NMC and Parliamentary leadership meeting this morning, the NMC granted permission to the Party Secretariat to formally engage with the ODM party in drawing a framework agreement on a pre-coalition arrangement,” the party said in a statement.
Last week, the Head of State pronounced himself on the 2022 General Election and revealed that Raila is his choice for successor.
