Fifteen earth dams have been constructed across the four wards of Mwingi West with the aim of boosting food security in the area.

Speaking at Nzawa market in Nguutani ward while he commissioned rehabilitation of Mwivwano earth dam, Mwingi West MP, Charles Nguna, said so far 15 such dams have been sunk.

The legislator said the National Irrigation Authority has heavily invested in the construction of the dams thus enabling locals to get clean water and also water for irrigation.

Nguna said each dam is set to benefit 5,000 households.

National Irrigation Authority Communication manager, Daniel Nzonzo, said the authority has identified over 4,000 such dams as of 2017.

The authority has so far done 200 and most have a capacity of 80 million litres of water.

Construction of the dams cost approximately 20 million shillings each.
