– Out of the new 309 COVID-19 cases, (302 Kenyans and seven foreigners) 217 are males while 92 are females
– Health CAS Rashid Aman warned that the high number of cases being reported implied that Kenya’s death toll was expected to increase and health facilities overwhelmed over time
– Aman attributed the deeply rooted community transmission to non-wearing of masks by citizens and also disregard of other health guidelines
The number of COVID-19 cases in Kenya has increased to 7,886 after 309 more people tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, July 5.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman said the new patients were identified after testing of 4,228samples.
Over the past 24 hours, Aman revealed the number of recoveries had increased to 2,287after51 patients were discharged while deaths had grown to 160 following the death of one patient.
In his address, the CAS said as Kenya’s cases raced towards the peak, the death toll was expected to rise while medical facilities risked being overwhelmed by patients.
“The growing number of cases implies that many more people will require critical care and our healthcare facilities may be overwhelmed. The fatality rate is also likely to increase under the current circumstances,” said Aman
The new COVID1-19 patients were drawn from Nairobi (193), Kajiado (22), Kiambu (20), Mombasa (18), Makueni (17), Busia (11), Machakos (nine), Nakuru (eight) while Nandi and Turkana had three cases each.
Other cases were from Narok (two) while Kakamega, Nyandarua and Kilifi and a single case each.
As of the evening of Sunday, the number of COVID-19 cases globally was 11,415,901 which included 6,463,630 recoveries and 534,254 deaths since the disease broke out in China in late 2019.
