Amidst
fears that the Kenyan’s healthcare systems could be overwhelmed by the Coronavirus
pandemic, 5 governors are leaving nothing to chance and have prepared for any
eventuality by installing ICU beds, complete with medical
gas systems, oxygen cylinders, dry air, ventilators and patient monitors.
A local publication
quoted a source confirming that “a number of high-profile people have been in a rush to install
ICU beds in their homes, complete with all the required equipment. Some of the
people we have supplied (the ICU equipment) to and oversaw the installation of
the facilities at their homes include five governors who have also made
arrangements for standby private doctors and nurses which is a prerequisite”.
Two of the governors head counties that severely hit by Covid-19 in April and May while one has a pre-existing medical condition that makes him at risk should he contract Covid-19.
Two are from the Coast region, another two from the Nyanza region and one from upper Eastern Kenya.
A source who was involved
in the procurement and installations of the equipment divulged that each unit
cost in excess of 10 Million Kenya shillings.
Coming at a time when
the counties are grappling with acute shortage of ICU beds, the move has been criticized
by many as selfish.
Kenya reported 473
cases on Friday, the highest ever reported with 8 people losing their lives
over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 9,448.

them doctor Doreen Lugaliki, were also recorded over the last 24 hours which is
the highest deaths so far reported.
6,979 samples
were tested. The total cases now stand at 9,448.
