Almost ten years ago, Mzee Ndung’u Kariuki was all the newspapers after he died the unthinkable; marrying a young lady who qualified to be his granddaughter. He was 80 years then and the woman was just 30.
The story sparked a divisive debate among Kenyans, with some claiming he married a minor and others arguing it was morally wrong to settle down with her.
A decade down the line, Mzee Kariuki has no regrets.
The woman she married is her second wife. His first wife with whom they had seven children died in 2007.
Interestingly, he met his current spouse his daughter. His offspring planned to use the woman to siphon money from him, but the game changed after he unanticipatedly fell in love with her and married her in record time.
Speaking during an interview on the Wambui wa Mwangi YouTube channel, the 90-year-old explained that his children tried to protest the relationship but he outsmarted them.
“Everything was done in a hurry. We did a civil marriage and then paid the dowry. Her parents accepted me,” he said.
However, that marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life; a bitter chapter for that matter.
Mzee Kariuki is a wealthy man. He earned his money during the colonial era and made huge land investments.
Being one of the few Africans whose education was sponsored by a white settler, he received multiple job offers from British companies that were constructing roads in Kenya.
He purchased huge tracts of lands in many parts of Nakuru.
So, when he married his second wife, his children felt like the woman was after his estate.
Fight With Children
According to him, they went in his back and changed ownership of some of his title deeds and subdivided the land among themselves.
“I am a dairy and wheat farmer. My children instead of approaching me and asking for their inheritance used my daughter whom I had trusted with the documents and dispossessed me.”
Even after they evicted him from his property, he did not take legal action as he still loves them.
The old man now lives with his wife on one of the few farms his children were not able to take from him.
He described the second wife as the best gift God gave him.
“I didn’t know true love until I met her. She takes care of me in a way I have never experienced in my entire life. Her foods are very sumptuous. I thank God for her,” he said.
The millionaire added that he is looking for a good lawyer to help him transfer to his wife the multi-million assets still under him.
“When I die, I don’t want her to suffer. I know my children can take everything from her and that’s why I want to have a Will. What they took I have given them, but the rest belongs to my second wife.”
Together with the current partner, they have one child and he plans to add another.
“I’m still fertile,” he said.
