The family of the two brothers who were murdered in Embu on August 1 was yet again in pain as it laid to rest a senior member.
Grace Gichuki, the grandmother to Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura was interred yesterday in Kianjakoma.
Locals came out in large numbers to bid farewell to the 94-year-old.
Some family members were overwhelmed by grief, just like two weeks ago when Njiru and Mutura were laid to rest.
According to the family, the elderly became a victim of depression after learning of her grandsons’ deaths.
The brothers’ father John Ndwiga revealed that she stopped talking to everyone after the incident.
She was taken to Runyenjes Hospital, where she died of high blood pressure triggered by depression.
“She was the only surviving grandmother and was very close to the boys. She was a strong woman, but after the deaths, she would come to the homestead and never speak to anyone,” Ndwiga said.
Njiru and Mutura were allegedly killed by officers from the Manyatta police station for flouting the curfew.
They were arrested alongside other residents, but what happened to them between Kianjokoma town and the Manyatta police post remains a mystery to many.
Witnesses said when the police arrived, residents scampered for safety, but Mutura was not lucky. He was allegedly clobbered with a baton in the head.
When Njiru tried to go and rescue his brother, he met a similar fate.
They became unconscious and were cramped in the police car, but unlike other offenders, the brothers were bundled on the front seat.
However, the police claimed the young men jumped from a moving vehicle.
Six officers from the police post were dismissed and arrested after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) positively linked them to the murders.
They were arraigned last week. The court allowed detectives to hold them for 14 days pending conclusion of investigations.
Through their lawyer Danstan Omari, the suspects went to court on Thursday to demand exhumation of Njiru and Mutura’s bodies.
In their suit, the officers said a fresh postmortem should be conducted.
