National Assembly members allied to Deputy President William Ruto have for the first time in three years defeated a motion in the House.

The Tangatanga MPs voted against the new House Business Committee, paralysing all operations in the National Assembly for six months when the motion can be reintroduced. The voting was done by acclamation.

During the session, most MPs allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga were not present.

The committee is one of the most instrumental organs in the House, as it sets the agenda and without it, no business can be transacted.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi expressed his shock at the decision, stating that many lawmakers want to focus on campaigns towards their re-election in August.

“There cannot be any business because there has to be a House Business Committee to process anything for the House. And because a motion that is similar to this one ins substance may not be moved until six months, so you don’t have to wait for IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati to do anything else, I think you have resolved the matter for him,” he said.

However, Muturi said members who rejected the committee can rescind their decision anytime as per the Standing Orders 49.

The allies of the DP celebrated their win, saying that the ‘Handshake’ team has taken them for granted for way too long.

“We are hitting back and we will do it over and over again until they realise that we are also members of this House and we must be involved,” Sirisia MP John Waluke said.

However, Azimio la Umoja allied MPs said there were extremely disappointed, arguing that the move shows that their counterparts do not care about Kenyans.

“This is like bringing the country down. When are we supposed to read the budget? This is just selfish and chest-thumping,” Saboti MP Caleb Amisi protested.
