Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, on Monday, 28th March released the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at Mtihani House in Nairobi.
Speaking during the press briefing, Magoha noted that the overall performance in 2021 dipped compared to that of 2020.
In the 2021 exams, the top candidate scored a total of 428 Marks out of the possible 500.
In terms of gender performance, Magoha said that boys recorded 50.28 per cent while girls recorded 49.72 per cent.
He said that some six papers recorded an impressive improvement in the examinations as compared to the 2020 exams.
These papers include English and composition, Science, Kiswahili and Insha, Social Studies, Kenya sign language composition while Mathematics, English Language, and religious studies recorded a drop as compared to the 2020 exams.
The CS further noted that there were minimal cases of exam malpractices compared to the previous years, adding that his Ministry is working to ensure these cases are eliminated.
“The exam has been watertight. We only had a few cases of teachers taking photos of the exam once they left the containers. This is why we banned phones from exam centres,” he said.
Some 1,225,507 candidates sat the 2021 KCPE exam between Monday, 7th March and Thursday, 10th March. This number reflected a 2.83 per cent increase as opposed to the 1,191,752 candidates who sat for the exam in 2020.
