When Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced KCSE results on Saturday, a family in Thika, Kiambu County, burst into celebrations after their identical twins received similar grades.

Patrick Mbugua and Gabriel Kamau, both of Gilgil’s Utumishi Boys Academy, scored an A- (minus) of 77 and 75 points, respectively, making them among the school’s top performers.

Mbugua and Gabriel, who were born on Valentine’s Day, have been together since infancy, according to their mother, Lydia Wangui, and even academics have been unable to tell them apart.

“I am really delighted, and I can’t hide my happiness,” Wangui told Citizen TV.

Gabriel and Mbugua scored B+, A, and A- in English, Mathematics, and Biology, respectively, while having the same overall grade.

“I was astonished I earned the same grade as my brother, but I believe it’s due to our collaborative efforts,” Gabriel explained.

“We started at the same primary school and we managed to earn the same grades,” Mbugua said, citing their competitiveness as a significant component in their success. We went to the same secondary school and have been studying and competing together all along. For example, if he beats me in one exam, I view it as a challenge to beat him in the next.”

The ecstatic twins intend to follow medicine at the same university but specialise in Cardiology and Orthopedic surgery, praising their teachers’ tireless efforts, moral and emotional support from their parents, and self-discipline for their exceptional success.

“Like Dr. Gikonyo, who is my mentor and role model, I want to pursue medicine and surgery and eventually become a cardiologist.”

In the meantime, their mother has pledged that, despite her financial limits, she will make sure that they both pursue their dreams vocations.
