Transport CS James Macharia says the Nairobi Expressway which is now open to the public will exponentially reduce traffic along Mombasa road.

Motorists had an opportunity for a trial of the expressway after CS Macharia commissioned it Saturday morning ahead of the launch.

Macharia said 11,000 thousand vehicles have been registered on the road, with 7,000 of them registered to use the electronic toll collection.

The CS revealed that the old Mombasa Road will be rehabilitated at a cost of Ksh9B and will include a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line.

According to State House, the 8-lane elevated dual carriageway created over 6,000 direct jobs, benefitted 200 sub-contractors and hundreds of other local suppliers of building materials such as steel, sand, cement and ballast.

State House welcomed the timely launch of the Express Way saying it is expected to significantly decongest Mombasa Road and reduce travel time between Mlolongo and Westlands to an average of 15 minutes.
