Audio adaptation of Broadway show FELA! to premiere on Clubhouse – KBC

FELA! is a musical based on Fela Kuti’s music and lyrics.

Ten years ago, it was curtains for one of the popular musical shows, ‘Fela’. And now ten years later, FELA! is coming to the audio-only platform, Clubhouse. Fela Kuti remains one of Africa’s most prolific musicians. His musical provocations demanded a global engagement with African politics and the challenges facing Black people worldwide. His musical method and style invited the world in, and in doing so, Fela gave the Nigerian people an amplified voice. The FELA! Broadway production took the world by storm 10 years ago by revisiting Fela’s story. 

The audioplay adaptation of FELA! titled ‘Fela Ten-Twenty’ brings together a talented team of producers and artists that represent Nigeria and the global Black diaspora. In its adapted form, the show highlights contemporary Nigerian issues, linking them to the story of Fela and his vision for Nigeria and Black people all over the world.

With the surge of #EndSARS protests across Nigeria last year, it was clearer than ever that Nigeria is still enduring the conditions that Fela fervently sang about. The audio coming to ClubHouse on May 15th, also intentionally triples speaking roles for women by bringing the voices of the Kalakuta Queens, women who fought alongside Fela, to the forefront.
