A section of Kenyans has demanded the arrest of ODM leader Raila Odinga after he made a remark that critics say is inflammatory.

While addressing his supporters in Wajir County today, February 9, Raila used the word “madoadoa” to ask residents to vote for Azimio la Umoja candidates.

He urged the locals to embrace candidates who were supporting his presidential bid.

“We want Wajir to be an Azimio la Umoja zone. Elect Azimio contenders. We don’t want madoadoa in this county.

“My supporters, be prepared with guns and bullets. Guns are national identity cards while bullets are the voters’ cards,” he said.

The sentiments attracted a whirlwind of reactions on social media, with opponents asking for the apprehension of the ODM chief.

They argued that “madoadoa” amounts to hate speech and incitement.

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi made used the “madoadoa” phrase a few weeks ago during a rally in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

He was arrested and grilled for hours by the detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Raila is among leaders who called out the lawmaker for inciting Kenyans.

Barely two weeks ago, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji said he would not prefer any charges against Linturi since there was no evidence to show that his remark was inciteful.

Some Kenyans are saying the opposition boss should also be apprehended and investigated just like Linturi.

Reactions

Kipchumba Murkomen: “To demonstrate rule of law and in particular equality before the law, let DCI and DPP act as swift as in the case of Mithika Linturi.”

Mercy Chepkemoi: “Raila should be in jail. His remarks are the reason why he will never be the President of Kenya.”

Victor Juma: “We must all admit that baba is above the law and therefore the term madoadoa is universally acceptable in the political context.”

Alex Moi: “May the rule of law be applied to every Kenyan #ArrestRaila.”
