Embattled Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino who has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons has launched a noble initiative to transform the lives of his constituents.

Babu who has been offering free online classes on his social media platforms announced that he will be offering scholarships with underway plans to launch a website where students can access relevant learning materials.

The initiative will seek to benefit students whose classes were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as those from needy backgrounds.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative, the lawmaker disclosed that he has put in place a comprehensive means to vet beneficiaries of the initiative, adding that only the deserving will get the scholarship.

“We are going to come up with a mobile application where students are going to subscribe. Then we will get their details through the app and the website then communicate to deserving ones.

“We know how we will vet our students because we will have a committee who will do that work. Having gone through the whole system we know how we will work around it,” Stated the lawmaker.

The website would feature learning content that would vary from past papers and answers, tutorials and short notes for various subjects.

The website is expected to be launched after a month after which students from across the country can access learning materials.

Babu also promised to continue with his online classes that have attracted international attention and are streamed through his social media platforms.

The legislator clarified that the scholarship and the website will only cater to high school students but he stated that it could be extended to other levels of education.

“We, for now, are dealing with secondary from Form One to Form Four, but if there is public demand we can see how to consider primary and university students,” he explained.

He promised more contributions to the Kenyan education system when schools resume in January 2021.

The lawmaker was recently recognized by the United Nations and the Voice of America (VOA) for teaching students online amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
