Kajiado South Member of Parliament Katoo ole Metito has said he is the most suitable candidate for the position of governorship of Kajiado county in the upcoming polls set for later this year.

Metito noted that besides being a politician of vast experience, he also possesses managerial abilities which will propel his gubernatorial stint should he be elected in August.

“I’m one of the longest serving legislators having been in parliament for the last 20 years.Besides ,I have served as a minister before and also chaired one of the critical committees at the National Assembly. My technocratic approach to issues will be a key factor in my quest to offer servant leadership to the great county of Kajiado whose people have really suffered under the previous admnistrations” he said .

Metito who beat three other candidates by 72,679 votes in the just concluded United Democratic Alliance primaries extended an olive branch to his competitors urging them to work together for the betterment of area residents.

Interestingly, the vibrant lawmaker kept off his Initial polling station during nominations and instead spent most of his time in the populous Kajiado North Constituency saying that participating in the exercise would have pitted him against his loyal supporters some of whom were contesting for other various positions.

“I’m one man who believes in sportsmanship and should I have lost I wouldn’t have hesitated to support the winner and the same spirit should apply to my colleagues whom I defeated in a legitimate exercise. Our county is greater than an individual and they should support my candidature and together we’ll restore the lost glory and reputation of county number 34” added Metito.

Metito will be seeking to unseat the incumbent Joseph Lenku who is defending his seat on Orange Democratic Movement(ODM) ticket in a hotly contested battle which has also attracted the candidature of former county boss David Nkedianye eyeing to capture the seat on the ruling Jubilee party.

At stake are the 411,193 registered voters in 797 polling stations across the five subcounties of South, West, North, Central, and East, which are also constituencies.

Major tribes in Kajiado are the dominant Maasai voters (147,000), Kikuyu (125,023), Kamba (48268), Kisii (24,689), Luo (20,296) and Luhya (20,062).

Others are Kalenjin (8,056), Ameru (6,769), Somali (4,946), Taita (1,480), Mijikenda (963), Kuria (268) and others.

The Maasai are spread across the region and concentrated in the reserves.

A decade ago, Kenyans voted to decentralize government, ushering in a new era of leadership with 47 governors and their teams taking up the reins of power in newly-created counties.

County governments negotiated a working relationship with the national government in terms of power and revenue sharing, and have encountered political, fiscal and administrative challenges in the delivery of services to Kenyans.
