K24 news anchor Betty Kyalo has left Mediamax’s barely two years after she joined the station as a member of the dream team that would take the Uhuru Kenyatta-owned station to the next level.
After anchoring the news on Saturday night of May 30, 2020, Betty Kyalo who was on a salary of sh950k announced her exit, thanking fans who had supported her.
“I really appreciated you all. It’s now time for me to say Goodbye here on K24 TV, if we meet again great, if not you know how you can find me on all my social media platforms, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, Betty Kyallo lately its going to be popping and we are going to be doing great things there. Thank you so much for all your support I appreciate You God bless you and I love you. Good Night.”
Betty has been embroiled in a tussle with her employer in the recent months that led to law suit, after the latter announced plans to cut senior employer salaries by 50 percent.
She was among the 36 employees who went to court and successfully obtained orders to stop the salary cuts.
The controversial media personality becomes the third senior employee to leave the station over salary cuts after Head of TV and Digital Peter Opondo and Head of Commercial Caroline Mwangi.
This also comes a few weeks fter President Uhuru Kenyatta was spotted at the offices of Mediamax Network Limited, which owns radio, print and television operations including K24, People Daily and Milele FM on Saturday, April 25.
The president’s impromptu visit came at a time when the company has been rocked by internal wrangling
Uhuru reportedly made his way into the DSM Place headquarters of the company on Nairobi’s Kijabe Street in his black Mercedes G-Wagon. He was trailed by at least three Toyota land cruisers, with staff members revealing that he arrived at around 6.30 p.m.
Sources joined a board meeting as it neared its conclusion, with the meeting primarily discussing the dramatic events at the company that hit the headlines in recent weeks.
It is expected that more will exit, with Anne Kiguta and radio presenter Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o on the list. Jalang’o has not been on radio for sometime now, and it is expected that he could be on his terminal leave.
Recently, Mediamax announced plans to fire more employees over the adverse effects of Covid-19 pandemic to the economy.
In a letter to the county labour office, Mediamax acting CEO Ken Ngaruiya said that the company will abolish some positions as part of its cost optimization measures in the wake of its new business realities.
“The services of some of its employees will be rendered superfluous thereby necessitating the termination of their employment on account of redundancy. In accordance with the provisions of Section .10 of the Employment Act. No. II of 2007, Mediamax Network Limited hereby gives one (1) month’s notice of the intended redundancies,” said Mr Ngaruiya.
Here are how Kenyans reacted to Betty’s K24 exit
Betty Kyalo had to go. Her show had no viewers and K24’s investment in her (Salary of Ksh 950K Pm) failed to break even. In fact, she was to be fired last year around October, but was given a second chance.
