The Kenya Primary Education Assessment (KPEA), which will be conducted under the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), is set to take the place of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in the near future (KCPE).
According to Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chair John Onsati, this will happen near the end of the year, when the academic calendar will have returned to normalcy, when the final batch of Standard Eight students sit their exams.
“We want to inform the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that at the end of the year, KNEC will administer the Kenya Primary Education Examination Grade 6 summative assessment,” said Dr Onsati.
The 32-year-old 8-4-4 curriculum will be replaced by the new 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum. This will be the country’s second time implementing a new curriculum since transitioning from the 7-4-2-3 system in 1985.
Seven years of elementary school, four years of lower secondary school, two years of upper secondary school (forms 5-6), and three years of university education were included in this plan.
A 10-month refresher course will be given to teachers in charge of the forthcoming junior high school students, Grades 7 and 8. 60,000 teachers are estimated to have completed the course.
